SWARTHMORE - A Rock and Folk Festival will open Monday in Swarthmore College's Clothier Hall.

Opening the festival at 2:30 p.m. will be the United States of America, a Los Angeles group. Other name groups will appear April 5 and 6 in Clothier Hall.

The festival will bring to the campus up-and-coming artists with a wide diversity of talents and different approaches to the rock and folk idioms," according to festival chairman Warren Phinney.

The Los Angeles group's appearance will be the only one in the Philadelphia area and will mark the end of its first eastern tour.

Phinney said the group is comprised of "very serious musicians attempting to bring the influence of Indian, western classical and electronic music, as well as jazz, into rock."

Joe Byrd, leader of the group arranged the orchestration of Phil Ochs', "Pleasures of the Harbor".

Folk artists Joni Mitchell and John Fahey will give a concert at 8:30 p.m. April 5.

Joni is a singer and composer who wrote two of the songs on Judy Collins' "Wildflowers" album.

She has appeared at the Main Point, the Second Fret, and the Philadelphia Folk Festival and has recorded an album.

Fahey is a solo guitarist who draws on country blues, early jazz, hillbilly, gospel and ragtime music. He has made several albums.

The festival will conclude with an 8:30 p.m., April 6 concert by Jeremy and the Satyrs, and the Group Image.

The Satyrs have recorded albums ranging from electric jazz to earthy blues.

The New Yorker magazine has called Jeremy Steig, the group's leader "probably teh most sophisticated musician in rock today."

The Group Image has performed for several months at New York's Palm Gardens. There are 25 members in the group, six of whom comprise a hard rock band while the rest dance and put on a show.
