Multi-disciplinary festival Luminato will be returning to Toronto from June 14 to 23, and the organizers have confirmed a small handful of this year's attractions. This includes a two-night tribute to Canadian songwriting great Joni Mitchell.

The event is dubbed "Joni: A Portrait in Song - A Birthday Happening Live at Massey Hall," and it will take place on June 18 and 19. These concerts are in celebration of Mitchell's 70th birthday (although, technically speaking, Joni's big day isn't until November). Among the artists who will perform interpretations of her songs are Rufus Wainwright, Frames/Swell Season frontman Glen Hansard and jazz veteran Bill Frisell, with the help of Brian Blade, Melvin Butler, Jon Cowherd, Jeff Haynes, Mark Isham, Chris Thomas and Marvin Sewell.

Other artists are still to be announced, but musical direction and arrangements were provided by drummer/bandleader Brian Blade, along with pianist/composer Jon Cowherd.

This retrospective performance is a timely one; just last fall, Mitchell released a CD box set through Rhino/Warner containing some of her most celebrated albums.

Luminato has also confirmed plans to stage L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato by the Mark Morris Dance Group (June 21 to 23 at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) and the Atom Egoyan-directed opera Feng Yi Ting (June 20 to 22 at MacMillan Theatre).

Tickets for these three events are being packaged together as the Premiere Series, and prices range from $154.50 to $349.50. They go on sale on March 20, while single tickets go on sale beginning April 20. Check back to Luminato.com for further updates and information.
