Over Joni Mitchell Track, Or Manufacturing Error?

The much talked about Grace Of My Heart soundtrack, featuring '60s-era songwriters teaming with the cream of the crop of '90s musicians, was recalled by MCA Records allegedly because permission to use the Joni Mitchell-sung track, "Man From Mars," was not obtained in time for the release.

However, MCA denies that it was a licensing error and claims the recall was due to a "manufacturing error," says a company spokesperson. More than 40,000 copies of the soundtrack, featuring such collaborations as Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello on "God Give Me Strength," which is the first single from the album, were recalled before the album's Sept. 10 release date. The album was resent to stores on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

The movie is set in the songwriting era of the famed Brill Building, which spawned such noted singer/songwriter teams as Gerry Goffin and Carole King and Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry. In the movie, Matt Dillon portrays a character similar to Brian Wilson (whose music is composed by J Mascis), with Redd Kross as his Beach Boys-like backing band, Bridget Fonda plays the Lesley Gore character, and Ileana Douglas (To Die For) stars as a songwriter who is a composite of King and Greenwich.
