The killer of renowned jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius was sentenced by a Broward judge Monday to 21 months in prison and five years probation.
Broward Circuit Judge M. Daniel Futch Jr. agreed to the punishment for nightclub manager Luc Havan as a provision of a plea bargain. Havan previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Pastorius, 35, of Fort Lauderdale, died Sept. 21, 1987, of severe head injuries received in a beating administered by Havan, 26, of Oakland Park. Police said the musician was drunk and trying to gain entrance to the after-hours club Havan managed, the Midnight Bottle Club in Wilton Manors.
Pastorius, a three-time Grammy Award nominee, was hailed for his innovative work on the bass guitar. He played with groups and performers including Weather Report, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Joni Mitchell and Herbie Hancock.
