13th Annual SOCAN Awards Celebrate the Flourishing Canadian Music Industry

TORONTO, Nov. 18 /CNW/ - Canada's music talent gathered at the 13th annual SOCAN Awards tonight, held at the Art Gallery of Ontario, to recognize their peers' outstanding contributions throughout 2001. Canadian superstar Joni Mitchell attended to receive the distinguished Wm. Harold Moon Award, which recognizes her contribution in bringing international recognition to Canada through her music over the course of her career.

Other award winners include: pop star Nelly Furtado, for I'm Like a Bird and Turn off the Light - in the Pop Music Category; alternative rockers Nickelback, for How You Remind Me - in the Rock Music Category; and the fast- rising Carolyn Dawn Johnson, for Complicated and Downtime - in the Country Music Category.

The gala Awards celebrate the achievements and successes of SOCAN-member songwriters, lyricists, composers and publishers. SOCAN Awards are presented to outstanding creators and publishers in music categories including Pop, Country, Urban, Dance, Folk/Roots, Jazz/Instrumental, Concert, Children's, Television and Film.

Special honours also went out tonight to Myles Goodwyn who received the National Achievement Award and Claudette Fortier who was the recipient of the Special Achievement Award. Please see the attached 'Winners List' or visit the Web site www.socan.ca for complete list of winners and further details.

Myles Goodwyn's career spans several decades with many hit songs and platinum albums. In 1969, this singer/guitarist/producer formed the internationally acclaimed band April Wine, which went on to become an institutional Canadian stadium rock act. With critical acclaim and a long- standing career, Goodwyn is a deserving recipient of SOCAN's National Achievement Award for his outstanding success in the Canadian music industry over the course of his career.

SOCAN honoured Claudette Fortier with the Special Achievement Award, which recognizes a significant contribution to the Canadian music industry and/or to Canada's musical heritage. Fortier, formerly the General Manager of SODRAC (Society for Reproduction Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers in Canada) and currently their copyright and business development advisor, has championed the rights of music creators and publishers for more than a quarter of a century. She has also recently represented Canadian creators' rights by serving with CISAC (International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers).

Paul Brandt, winner of eight CCMA awards (most recently for "Best Male Artist"), five Juno awards, a Billboard best-selling new male artist trophy and a CMT top new male artist award, hosted this year's Gala. SOCAN's President, Gilles Valiquette, presided over the event. Music creators and publishers, as well as representatives from Canada's music industry, sister performing rights societies and notable government officials were in attendance.

SOCAN will recognize outstanding music creators from Quebec at a second awards show on Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at the Hotel Omni Mont-Royal in Montreal. SOCAN members Michel Pagliaro, Luc Plamondon, Michel Rivard, Richard Séguin, Kevin Parent and Louise Forestier, to name a few, will join host Jim Corcoran in celebration of this year's SOCAN award winners.
