Folks, it’s time for you to head to the store and pick up a frame because you’re going to want the cover of this month’s New York Magazine hung on your wall. Legendary musician and folk icon Joni Mitchell is on it, and she looks as cool as you would expect somebody who’s spent 71 years being awesome might look.

The cover story, titled “Joni Mitchell, Unyielding: Singer, muse, implacable autobiographer,” details several aspects of the “folk goddess” and her life, including her recent campaign with Yves Saint Laurent and the fact that she’s been ill for eight years with Morgellons, described by Joni as a “weird, incurable disease that seems like it's from outer space.” You would never know from looking at her in these portraits by photographer Norman Jean Ray that she’s sick, however, because she looks absolutely incredible.

While there were a few snarky remarks about the photos (I saw a few tweets calling Joni “Saruman,” and to be fair, she is wearing all white with the straightest silver hair ever), the reception seems overwhelmingly positive. Not only does she exhibit the free-spirited, casual glamor that, style-wise, she has been famous for, it’s also clear that NY Mag did not want to airbrush out her signs of aging or visually reduce her age. Instead, her wrinkles are almost highlighted, proving you do not need to have skin as smooth as a baby’s in order to look incredible on a cover. She looks like herself, age lines and all, and that is beautiful.

While there is obviously still an overwhelming bias towards models under 22 who seemingly walk around with Instagram filters woven into their DNA, the fashion industry has begun acknowledging and honoring women older than 40 now more than nearly ever. Women like 82-year-old supermodel Carmen Dell’Orefice, American Apparel breakout star Jacky O’Shaughnessy, American Horror Story‘s Jessica Lange, and the great Joan Didion have all starred in various campaigns and runway shows. Now, all we need to do is get it to incorporate them on a regular basis. In an industry that to frequently airbrushes all life out of its cover models, wouldn’t it be nice to see wrinkles, grey hair, and age spots sometimes?
