Joni was once quoted as saying, when asked about the meaning of a certain lyric, "Who cares what I meant! What does it mean to you??"

It's with that blessing that we embark on the project of defining for ourselves the many interesting references that are scattered throughout the four decades of her lyrics.

Our goal is to provide a reference tool for all Joni fans - from the novice to the expert - to help them better understand the lyrics of the planet's best songwriter. Your contribution can be a definition of terms Joni uses in the context that they are used, or an analysis of the lyric itself.

The emphasis for this project is on research. For example, you may choose to define "Benny Goodman". Submitting the fact that "Benny was an influential jazz player" is not really useful to the project. Very impressive, however, would be an entry that contained the following:

- the text of a detailed biography.
- links to available recordings.
- links to a number of websites with info on Benny.
- links to a picture or two that can be used on the page.
- etc, etc, etc.

Now... how do you begin? What should you define? Anything you want, basically. Pick a reference from any of Joni's lyrics and start your research. Even if the reference is already defined - if you feel you have more to add you may still research it and submit it to the project.
