SHE ADDED ONE, DROPPED ONE
Joni Didn't Change Her Name
Q: I heard recently that Joni Mitchell's real name was Roberta Joan Anderson. If that's true, why would she have changed her name? - George Anderson, Ft. Worth Texas.
A: Joni Didn't change her name. She added one, and dropped one. The Canadian born songrwriter/singer discarded her first name, Roberta, and became Joni Mitchell when she married Chuck Mitchell in Toronto in 1965. Her marriage to Mitchell was short-lived, but she has retained his name. Incidentally, Joni has written more than 60 songs and is about to release her fifth album - this one on Asylum Records, an off - shoot of Atlantic.
