JONI MITCHELL, the Canadian singer who had a hit with "Big Yellow Taxi" and also wrote "Both Sides, Now," leads off a new BBC-2 series called "In Concert," next Friday.
The whole series will be devoted to artists who write songs as well as perform them.
Says producer Stanley Dorfman: "In recent years folk music and pop have grown closer together, and a new breed of artist has emerged - the writer who sings his own work.
"This series is an attempt to show what has been happening, and to show some of the wealth of song-writing talent there is around.
Featured in the coming weeks will be Tom Paxton, The Pentangle, Alan Price, Bobbie Gentry, Tony [cut off], White, John Sebastian, Tim Hardin, Crosby and Nash, James Taylor, Randy Newman, Elton John and [cut off] Davis.
Joni Mitchell is probably one of the outstanding examples of the composer-performer. She is a concert artist in her own right, and her songs are in the repertoire of nearly every current folk singer of note.
