Lonely With Joni

[2004]

This poem was found on the University of Calgary's website.

Laying on my bed in my own room
the bed is covered in sheets I know
Joni Mitchell is singing to me about getting the urge for going
and my heart understands her so well
Candles flicker warmth all around me even with the window wide open
This is a place I know
I've been here the longest out of every place I've known
and still it's only been three years
But this is a place I know
and I'm safe
and it costs me nothing to be here
But still I know what Joni means singing
round and round in the circle game
My head spins in circles when I'm here
It spins until I'm forced to leave the comfort of this room
and walk through the rest of this house
and breathe the air the others who live here create
and it's too thick to breathe with the nausea I feel from all the circles
I close my eyes and everything is black
until I wake to find myself laying on my bed in my own room
and I notice the bed is covered in sheets I know
and Joni Mitchell is singing to me about getting the urge for going
and my heart understands her so well
