I had just moved out to Berkeley and had only been there for a few weeks when I saw that she was coming. It was my birthday weekend. The whole Bread and Roses event blew me away. I was REALLY living in California the way it was supposed to be.

David Gitin: I attended this Bread & Roses event where Joni was a last minute addition. Because of that, I drove up from Monterey and enjoyed John McEuen, Mimi Farina, David Bromberg, Odetta, Bob Gibson, Kenny Rankin, The Dirt Band. The highlight was the appearance of Joni Mitchell with Herbie Hancock as a duo and a debut of some of her MINGUS songs. I thought this duo was the state of the art for the American art song of that moment, so much so that I was disappointed in the MINGUS album with so many players when it appeared.
