Joni appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno tonight, and playing with her was drummer Brian Blade of New Orleans. Joni looked lovely and sounded great, her voice a sensuous whisper at the start but becoming bolder as she relaxed.
Her midi-ized electric guitar had a full, rich sound and the subtle drumming by Blade was a perfect blend with Joni's stylings. She performed a new song called "Love Puts on a New Face," it's melody was evocative of classic Mitchell with her snaking vocal lines and occasional idiosyncratic and delightful flourishes. The lyrics were also in the traditional Mitchell vein with their romantic yet tentative description of a love in early bloom.
