Joni Mitchell is expected to make a "full recovery," according to a statement posted on the singer's website Tuesday. Her team moved quickly to reassure fans after court documents surfaced earlier in the day stating that she is "unresponsive" in the hospital.

"Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet today, Joni is not in a coma," says the statement. "Joni is still in the hospital - but she comprehends, she's alert, and she has her full senses. A full recovery is expected."

Per the court documents, the singer-songwriter, 71, remains unconscious at UCLA Medical Center. Her longtime friend Leslie Morris filed the documents to become Mitchell's conservator.

According to the documents, Morris, who has been friends with Mitchell for "over 44 years," is filing for conservatorship because the singer has no "second degree" relatives as defined by the court.

First obtained by TMZ, the filing also states that the Canadian musician is "so impaired as to be incapable of being assessed."

But according to the new statement posted on Mitchell's site, "the document obtained by a certain media outlet simply gives her longtime friend Leslie Morris the authority - in the absence of 24-hour doctor care - to make care decisions for Joni once she leaves the hospital. As we all know, Joni is a strong-willed woman and is nowhere near giving up the fight."

A rep for Mitchell did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Mitchell was first rushed to the hospital March 31 after she was found unconscious in her L.A. home. The same day, a verified Twitter account for the singer Tweeted that she was in intensive care but "awake and in good spirits."
