Songs of Freedom, Washington DC, November 3

Posted November 02, 2018

Songs of Freedom explores three iconic voices of the 1960s—Joni Mitchell, Abbey Lincoln, and Nina Simone—and the complex ways in which they relate. Each artist expressed freedom in various ways: Joni composed and sang about the freedom of love, Abbey expressed freedom of her individuality and race with powerful lyricism, and Nina demanded freedom politically through song. Developed for Jazz at Lincoln Center by Grammy®-winning drummer Ulysses Owens Jr., the evening includes powerful vocal performances by Alicia Olatuja, René Marie, and Theo Bleckmann.
