Joni Tribute, Oklahoma City, March 19

Posted March 19, 2016

Five local performers will present a concert featuring the music of Joni Mitchell at 8pm at the Blue Door, 2805 N McKinley.

Shelly Phelps, Peggy Johnson and Sunshine Hahn will join Louise Goldberg and Mary Reynolds of Miss Brown to You to showcase the unique accomplishments of the iconic and much-loved singer-songwriter.

"All five of us have been inspired by Mitchell’s work for decades. When we presented this concept last year, we learned that people are really hungry to hear this music performed live," said Reynolds in a news release. "People have asked me all year long when we were going to do it again. When I asked Blue Door impresario Greg Johnson if he wanted to host this concert, he barely let me finish asking before saying emphatically ‘Yes!’"

Phelps released the CD "Beautiful and Burdened" with her band, The Scarlet Street Players, in 2015 to enthusiastic reviews. Scarlet Street Player Rob Vollmar will lend his guitar skills to tribute show.

Johnson has played her songs and told her stories since 1984 on many stages in the Oklahoma City area, including the Woody Guthrie Festival in Okemah.

Hahn recently returned to Oklahoma City, bringing her original music and blues-inspired interpretations back to local stages.

Goldberg and Reynolds of Miss Brown to You have performed extensively in clubs, concerts and theater productions in the area. Miss Brown to You released its third album, "Roll Away" in 2015 to local acclaim and national college radio airplay.

The night’s first set will be selections from all over the different periods of Mitchell’s long career, while the second set will be a round-robin, live interpretation of the essential 1971 album, "Blue."

"Each performer will bring her own point of view to ‘Blue.’ said Reynolds in the release. "It might be a verbatim reading, right off the album, or a complete re-imagining of the song. I don’t even know yet what’s going to happen. I recommend that Joni Mitchell fans just get there and find out."
