New Joni Mitchell Set A Standard Affair Print-ready version

by Julie Taraska
Billboard
May 21, 1999

Joni Mitchell is recording an album of standards with an orchestra. "I got hooked," the eclectic singer tells Billboard Online "when I performed with the El NiƱo Orchestra [at a 1998 benefit organized by Don Henley]. An arranger is working on the material now. I'm just going to come in to the studio and sing the songs like Frank [Sinatra]." Among the tracks she'll be covering are Billie Holiday's "Comes Love" and "You've Changed," as well as "Answer Me My Love" and "Stormy Weather."

Mitchell, a past winner of Billboard's Century Award, will also sing a few standards that she wrote, including "Both Sides Now." The project is being produced by her ex-husband, Larry Klein.

Mitchell's last album, "Taming The Tiger," was released last September by Reprise/Warner Bros. It peaked at No. 75 on The Billboard 200.
