Joni received the gold medal from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) at an intimate ceremony on Ruby Lake, British Columbia last night. The award was delivered personally by RCGS CEO John Geiger and Board President the Hon. Lois Mitchell.

“I am so happy to be back home, my native land. I have never been happier, or prouder to be a Canadian than I am right now. Happy Canada Day,” said Joni Mitchell.

“Her songs speak to the soul of this country—and far beyond our borders. She is one of the world’s greatest artists and we are honoured to welcome her into the Royal Canadian Geographical Society’s Fellowship through this honour,” said RCGS President and CEO John Geiger. More information here

Joni introduces Joni’s Jazz, a passion project years in the making. This career-spanning collection features recordings chosen by Mitchell that reflect jazz’s profound influence on her music.

The release arrives September 5 as an 8LP vinyl box set and will also be available as a 4CD edition and across all digital and streaming platforms. Both the vinyl and CD versions include liner notes with rare and previously unseen photos and original artwork by Mitchell.

As a self-portrait in sound, Joni’s Jazz captures an artist in conversation with jazz over a lifetime — never imitating, always inventing. Last year, in the liner notes for Joni Mitchell Archives – Vol. 4, she joked, “People ask me my favorite of my albums, it’s going to be Joni’s Jazz.” Now it is. More information here

Hejira’ is an outstanding 7-piece band set up to celebrate and honour the masterpiece works of Joni Mitchell, mostly from the late ‘70s. Having released the albums ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns’, ‘Hejira’, ‘Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter’ and ‘Mingus’, Joni then toured briefly with a band formed from the crème de la crème of contemporaneous musicians (Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker, Jaco Pastorius and Don Alias). The tour was recorded, producing the much-lauded live album, ‘Shadows And Light’; it is from this work that the band Hejira is drawing the spirit and body of its repertoire. Comprising highly experienced, world class musicians, Hejira is fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has – in her own way – assimilated the poise, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms. Expect an evening of the ‘great’ songs from Mitchell’s back catalogue, such and ‘Amelia’, The Hissing Of Summer Lawns’, ‘Coyote’, ‘Hejira’, ’Song For Sharon’, ‘In France They Kiss on Main Street’ etc.!
