After the Bombing of Dresden

Domestic portrait of Donald Freed. The painting title refers to an incident after an earthquake when Joni had to have her contents insured and revalued. The woman who came happened to be German and commented on the paintings, saying 'How could you do something like that?' 'What's wrong with it?' Joni asks. 'Brown!' the woman answers, 'After the bombing of Dresden every hack was conscripted to do brown propaganda paintings. Why would you want to do a painting like that?'

The woman was at the time referring to the painting 'Hyde Park' which was painted around the same time.
