In Feb/March 1981, Joni spent six weeks on the island of Saint Martin in the Caribbean. Jess H happened to arrive on the same day and met Joni at the airport while renting cars. The two began a friendship while getting to know the island. (One night, while they were both staying in Saint Barts at Autour du Rocher, a very small hotel partially owned by Jimmy Buffet, Joni and Jimmy played and sang back to back for the entire evening to a group of about 8 very lucky people). During the stay, Joni did two paintings and gave them to Jess. Apparently, the two paintings are of a similar scene, one being more abstract than the other. The other is here.

This painting was sold by the original owner to a private collector in Northern California in 2018
