Portrait of Jackson Browne in the clouds

(from Joni Mitchell by Angela LaGreca © Rock Photo June 1985)

Joni began photographing everywhere, especially in 1970-71 while touring the U.S. and Europe, double billed with Jackson Browne. He became her main model during that period. "We used to go to the movies on the road," she says, "he had a camera and got into it too." Together she and Jackson would sit in the movie theatre and try and shoot the cross fades (dissolves) between scenes, "pushing the film speed to the nth degree."

n 1975 I went to a jackson Browne concert and Joni was in the audience about 7 or 10 rows back from the stage. The bodyguards for that area were tight. I was just 16, a little flower girl wearing long braids, maxi skirt and fringed shawl. The isle bodyguard looked my eyes, lifted his arm and I slipped under, went to Joni, kneeling at her chair. I asked, "Are you Joni Mitchell." She was wearing that cool beret she wore back then. She put her hand over mine, that I'd rested on her thigh. All I could say to her then was, "You are so beautiful. You are so beautiful." Maybe she was amused but she felt sincere, that smile she shared. I floated back to my seat, hearing hisses coming from girls along the way, "You touched Joni, you bitch!" But those remarks didn't penetrate the glowing bubble embracing me. Thank you Joni for Being.
